The Agentic Era

Your next client might not visit your website. Their AI agent will.

AI assistants are becoming AI agents: software that researches, shortlists, verifies and books on a person's behalf. Your firm is about to be evaluated by machines acting for humans. Here is what that means, and how to be ready before your competitors are.

What is changing

For twenty years, winning clients online meant persuading a person: a website they liked, a Google ranking they found, a testimonial they trusted. Then AI assistants arrived, and the first question moved from a search box to a chat: "who is a good accountant for a business like mine?" That shift is what our AI Visibility Audit measures.

The next shift is already under way. Assistants are becoming agents. Instead of answering the question, the AI completes the task: it draws up the shortlist, opens each firm's website, checks who regulates them, extracts what they charge, compares them against the brief, and comes back with two names and a booking link. The person still decides. But the agent decides who makes the shortlist.

This is agent-to-agent business: your firm's machine-readable presence talking to your future client's machine. If your website only speaks human, that conversation happens without you.

66%

of UK senior decision-makers already use AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity to research suppliers, and around 90% trust the recommendations (Magenta Associates research).

42% better

conversion from AI-referred traffic compared with non-AI traffic in Adobe's 2026 retail data, with AI-referred visits up 393% year on year. The buyers AI sends are the most ready to act.

~10%

of websites have an llms.txt file as of mid-2026. Among UK professional services firms the figure is effectively zero. The field is wide open for firms that move first.

How an agent evaluates your firm

A person forgives a confusing website. An agent does not. It follows a colder, faster version of your client's buying journey.

1

Discovery: does the agent find you at all?

The agent asks its underlying AI models who serves this need. If your firm is absent from the sources those models trust, you are not in the running. This is classic AI visibility, and it is where most firms fail first.

2

Reading: can the agent understand your site?

The agent opens your website and reads its structure, not its design. Clean headings, structured data, an llms.txt summary and extractable text let it answer its owner's brief. Text locked in images, vague pages and broken structure read as silence.

3

Verification: can the agent trust you?

Agents cross-check. Regulatory registrations, professional body memberships, consistent facts across your site, directories and third-party sources. Every inconsistency lowers confidence, and a low-confidence firm quietly drops off the shortlist.

4

Comparison: how do you stack up on the brief?

Sector fit, services, location, fees where stated, evidence of expertise. Firms that state things clearly are comparable; firms that hide behind "contact us to discuss" often cannot be scored, and unscored firms lose to scored ones.

5

Action: can the agent take the next step?

Book the call, complete the enquiry form, request the proposal. If your forms and booking journey break when a machine drives them, the agent moves to the competitor whose site works.

Agent readiness: what we check

Every Solumari audit includes agent readiness checks. All verifiable, all screenshot-backed, no folklore. The technical standards behind them are real and current: Google's Lighthouse now includes an agentic-browsing audit category, and the WebMCP web standard entered its Chrome origin trial in May 2026.

Identity

llms.txt

A machine-readable summary of who you are, what you do and what matters on your site, at your domain root. The AI equivalent of a firm brochure. We check presence, structure and accuracy.

Identity

Structured data (schema.org)

Markup that tells machines your organisation, people, services, fees and credentials in their own language. We validate what exists and flag what is missing or wrong.

Access

AI crawler access

Many firms block AI crawlers in robots.txt without knowing it, often via an old template. Invisible by accident. We check access for the major AI user agents.

Legibility

Readable structure

Clean headings, a sound accessibility tree, stable layout, text that exists as text. What helps screen readers helps agents, and most professional services sites fail both.

Trust

Verifiable credentials

Regulatory registrations, professional body memberships and key facts stated consistently and extractably, so an agent's cross-check confirms rather than doubts you.

Action

Working journeys

Enquiry forms and booking paths that function when driven by a machine. If the agent cannot complete the task, the shortlist shrinks by one: you.

Honest answers to fair questions

Is this hype?

The infrastructure is real and dated: Lighthouse's agentic-browsing audits, the WebMCP Chrome origin trial from May 2026, llms.txt adoption around 10% of websites and rising. Agent adoption in professional services buying is early. That is the honest picture, and it is exactly why acting now is cheap and acting late is expensive. We will never tell you the sky is falling; we will show you screenshots.

Do I need to rebuild my website?

Almost never. Most agent readiness work is additive: an llms.txt file, structured data, robots.txt corrections, clearer credential statements, form fixes. Days of work, not months.

We are a small firm. Does this really apply to us?

Small firms benefit most. Agents do not care about brand size; they care about legible, verifiable, comparable information. A 6-partner firm with clean machine-readable signals can outrank a national name that has none. This is the rare moment where the playing field tilts toward the prepared rather than the big.
